Google AI uses a significant amount of electricity.
AI search results need ten times more energy than regular Google searches.
According to Digiconomist, if all Google searches had AI-generated answers, it would use as much energy as the entire country of Ireland.
Each AI search requires 3 watt-hours of electricity, which is similar to the electricity used by an LED lightbulb in your home for an hour.
Google averages 8.5 billion searches per day, which is about 98,379 searches per second.
If each AI search uses 3 watt-hours, that's a total of 295,138.88 watt-hours, or 295.14 kilowatt-hours, per second.
The average electric vehicle in 2023 has a 40 kilowatt-hour battery, so the electricity used by AI search in one second could charge about 7.5 electric cars.
In one day, the electricity used by AI searches is enough to charge 637,500 electric cars.
