The 2024 Paris Olympics are bringing a big change with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). This new technology will change how we watch and understand the Games.
Better Timing and Analysis
Alain Zobrist, CEO of Omega Timing, explained how new tech will make a big difference. Omega has been keeping track of Olympic times since 1932, and this year they are using AI to give us more details. For example, in swimming, special cameras will follow each swimmer’s movements closely. These cameras will help us see not just who wins, but how they perform in the water.
Safer Diving
Diving has a new safety feature. In the past, it was hard to judge if a diver’s head came too close to the board, but now, a new camera system will measure this distance accurately. This will help ensure divers stay safe by automatically noting any dangerous dives.
More Accurate Photo Finishes
In track and field, photo finishes are important for deciding winners. A new camera will take pictures at 40,000 frames per second, making it easier to see who crosses the finish line first and ensuring fair results.
Smart Bibs for Track and Field
Athletes will wear bibs with sensors that send data about their running performance. These sensors will track things like their position on the track and their speed, giving us detailed insights into the race.
Tracking Beach Volleyball and Tennis
For beach volleyball, smart cameras will track players’ movements and the ball’s speed, helping us understand the game better. In tennis at Roland Garros, even though electronic line-calling won’t be used, new tech will focus on analyzing serves and returns to see how quick and accurate players are.
Tech with Minimal Disruption
Zobrist said the goal is to use AI to improve how we understand the Games without bothering the athletes. By focusing on how athletes move and perform, rather than their personal data, the technology will give us a better view of their skills.
With these new technologies, the Paris Olympics will offer a fresh and exciting way to experience and analyze the Games.
